To finish off our blog series on How to Land a Job After Graduation, we thought we’d provide an update on the status of our intern, Ashley, who graduated just last month.

As background, we started out this blog series under the premise of helping college graduates in the job search process and telling them what it takes to stand out from the competition in the job market today. The series followed our intern and her journey of finding a job after graduation.

Now, about a month after graduation we can conclude the series with a positive note… Ashley accepted a position!

We would like to congratulate Ashley, because we realize how tough it is to find a job right out of college. What also helped boost Ashley’s success were her many internship experiences throughout her college years. We hope that college students will see the heavy importance and the value an internship (or two) can bring to post-graduation careers.

We are glad to have helped Ashley succeed in her job search, and we wish her the best!

A Letter to the Workplace

Dear Workplace,

I recently joined the workforce in May after graduation, and was eager to share my ideas and, more importantly, learn from others in the industry. So far, I have not been labeled “Gen Y” to other workers, but rather seen as a hard worker, excited to excel in my position. With all three generations of employees working together in the workforce today, the labeling of every generation and their negative qualities has gotten out of hand lately… I would like to see the finger pointing stop, that way we can all establish the same goals of accomplishment in the office, and ultimately have fun. Everybody wants to feel trusted and valued in the office – if not, then why go to work at all?

All throughout my schooling years, fellow peers along with the pressures from today’s society, created a strong sense of labeling people from what brands they wear and who they hang out with. I’m sure we’ve all been through this same experience at some point in school. Thinking about it today, I was never into labeling people or purchasing important name brands on my clothes. I talked with everyone, no matter what they wore or who they hung out with. All that mattered to me was having a good positive image and creating an attitude and environment around me to foster great relationships with my peers (with no labels attached). Maybe that’s why today I don’t label generations in the workplace. I see the good that all employees produce in their company to create the best output for everyone in the end. Continue reading

Your Career Journey: Avoid Thinking in Short-Term

A couple of months ago we wrote a blog “All About Passion with @garyvee and Steve Jobs.” We received a great comment back from an individual saying that as a recent college graduate, he would like to take a job that he was passionate about. The question remains if it’s a possibility in this economic climate.

I believe this person brings up an excellent point…I have been helping people along the hiring journey for a long time. Often, when a person receives one or multiple job offers, they are only thinking about the short-term gain (new job title, increase in salary, learning a new technology, etc).

6 Tips for a Smooth Transition into the Workplace from College

Two months ago, I started my job only two days after graduation with little time to prepare for the transition of the mentality behind college work to real work. The outside environment didn’t change for me- being right across the street from my college campus. Yikes! I Have an Interview Tomorrow, What Do I Do?

Have you ever been scheduled for an interview at the last minute?  Now that interview is tomorrow? Stop everything you’re doing and FOCUS!

Perfect Your Resume.

For starters, double check your resume and make sure it’s up-to-date. Read through your resume word for word, and be ready to be asked any questions about the tiniest detail of your resume.

For example, I felt I was well prepared for my very first phone interview…so I thought. At the very bottom of my resume under my ‘Skills’ section, I had Adobe Photoshop. I was asked what I had done with the program. My issue- I hadn’t used it in over two years!  It’s something I never learned in business classes, but picked up from watching a friend.

If you think you’ll get stuck when asked a question about a detail on your resume, take it out.

Know what you want from this job.

Always go into an interview with a career goal in mind. Employers can’t figure it out for you. In just about half of my old interviews, I was asked the same question, “Where do you want to be in 5 years?” It’s scary to think about, because everyone thinks in the short-term point of view. But if you have a career goal already intact and a passion for the particular position, share it with the interviewer! Employers want to know that you think in the future with long-term goals. They want to see what you have to offer the organization, what’s important to you, your qualities, and your enthusiasm for their field. Continue reading
